Know your property


Any historical property is a privilege to examine. ‘Respect your elders!’ is a term that pops into our heads every time we cross the threshold of an historical property, you are literally going back in time and it is an incredible feeling. And so, it should be, the science behind the construction and architecture needs understanding. Water vapour passes through an historical structure like a river, if you damn that river, then you are going to reap the expensive repair costs when the water finds another route outward, or inwards.

Know The Details


Everything from the topography, hydrology and geological makeup of that period property you are inspecting needs to be understood as intrinsically as if it was your best friend. I would say wife, but I don’t know how my wife would react to being likened to an age-old, stone structure!


An understanding of building pathology, construction science and enthusiasm for historical buildings is the reason why you should invite us round to inspect your property. Please don’t panic, we promise we will not hurt it, suffocate it nor try to change anything about its historical beauty.

We will merely try to educate and encourage you to invest a bit of time in managing the moisture around the property and ensuring that the external rainwater defences are constantly doing their job. Rainwater goods, i.e. gutters and downpipes, are the first defence for your property in removing the vast amounts of rainwater from around from the building envelope.

When the rainwater goods fail for a listed or period property the consequences can be hugely destructive. Rainwater that sits around the perimeter of any property, modern or old, will eventually overwhelm the structure and find a route inward, especially if left unchecked for a long time.


I could literally go on all day about the inner workings of an historical property and what you should and shouldn’t do to maintain it. However, it would be far easier to view your historical property in person and putting it under a microscope to see how its performing in its current state.
