All properties are prone to blocked gutters, if they’re not cleaned regularly. Blocked or overflowing gutters can cause all sorts of problems and damage to your property. Leaves, moss, dirt and other debris can block your gutters, meaning a build-up of static water which can result in leaking or overflowing gutters. This then results in unsightly staining to masonry walls and progressive internal damp issues. A lot of the rising damp cases we receive are usually caused by this issue.
Extra weight from a build-up in debris and rainwater can cause guttering to pull away from the fascia boards. Downpipes will also block solid in some extreme cases sending water back up the down pipe and overspill in areas that you really don’t want them to.
If water is unable to drain away from the property, it can then seep into your properties foundations and cause penetrating dampness. Gutters play an essential part in weather proofing your house, directing rainfall away from the outer skin of your property.
To test your whole rainwater system works, when it rains next, grab your brolly and walk around the perimeter of your home and check the gutters and downpipes, I would do this at least once a year, if more. I looked out of the office entrance the other day when it rained heavily and we noticed at least four leaking and defective sections of gutter on various surrounding buildings.
